Campers FAQ

Can I be with my friends?

When you and your parents receive personal information forms in March, there is a space which you can fill in to request being in the same cabin with your friend(s). We will do everything possible to accommodate your request. For those friends you have at camp not your age, you have an opportunity to see them often throughout the day and especially during free time after dinner.

Can I choose which activities I want to do?

During the day you go to the activities with your cabin. Your cabin will receive a schedule from the program Director for each day describing the activities to which you are assigned during the 3 periods in the morning and the 3 periods in the afternoon. You are given a chance to try each activity an equal amount and for these scheduled periods you do have the opportunity to make requests with your cabin for a particular activity. In the evening you can choose which activity you'd like to do and you can do it with the kids in your cabin or anyone else you choose in camp.

Do I get any free time?

Yes, after dinner each night and during open program which is the last three days of each month. Also, after lunch there is a rest hour where you get some free time in your cabins.

Do I need any special equipment to bring with me?

You should bring your own paddle and life jacket (clearly marked with your name). Kilcoo has a lot of equipment for you to use up at camp such at tennis racquets, sports equipment, etc., but you can bring our own. I would also recommend a baseball glove and even a squirt gun if you would like. Everything else you need to bring will be described when you receive your clothing list. I wouldn't bring expensive cameras or racquets.

Is the food good and can I get lots?

We have a chef at camp named Chris and he and his staff are awesome. There are always opportunities for seconds and even thirds if you want! Just remember to say "please".

Are there any big camp-wide games?

Every Sunday afternoon there is a camp game. Every camper participates and the game always has a cool theme. We usually have great themes for these games along with the traditional favorites like Capture the Flag. Each session also has its' own big special camp game. In July it is a day long event called the Bushpede, and in August, a three-day event called the Kilcoo Olympics.

What are the cabins like?

The cabins are wood and sleep 8 campers, a Counselor and an LIT. The campers and staff are separated by a wall with a door. The campers sleep in bunk beds and there is lots of space for clothes to be kept in cubbies. Each cabin has lots of windows for ventilation and electricity. At the end of the month, you are allowed to sign your name.

What are the washrooms like?

The washrooms or 'kybos' are flush toilets pretty much like at home. There are some classic 'hole in the ground' kybos just in case the power goes out. The kybos are centrally located around all the cabins.

Do I have to go swimming every day?

Each day (except Sunday), one of your scheduled periods is swim instruction. Your cabin and your section are separated into different classes. In these classes you work towards receiving your Royal Life Saving swim levels. Other than that there are lots of other opportunities for free swim throughout your stay at camp. We have a great jumping Tower with three different levels to jump from.

How long will my canoe trip be?

The length of your canoe trip depends on your age. The trips increase in length as you move on through the years at Kilcoo. Trips range from 1 night up to 2 weeks. Kilcoo also offers a one-month canoe trip to the Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories. The other trips take campers all over Ontario, Quebec and even some out to the West coast during the 2 week hiking trip offered to the oldest campers.
